Tasting the Food of Chicago on a Food Tour

Tasting the Food of Chicago on a Food Tour

I love food and when I was given the opportunity recently to do a food tour in Chicago, I jumped at the chance. I chose 'Chicago Food Planet Food Tours' because out of a total of 851 reviews on Trip Advisor, they had just 4 negative reviews and were rated #5 of all tours in Chicago. The tour visits six completely different locations and samples six different types of food whereas walking around the neighborhood, learning, and intake as you go.

I caught a train out to the suburb of Bucktown/Wicker park as the tour was not in the center of Chicago. It didn't take long and wasn't expensive. I was instructed to meet at "George's Hot Dogs". Our guide introduced herself so all eight people connection the tour gave a bit introduction to mention wherever we tend to had all come back from. I was the sole foreigner, all others were from America. We got an easy four page 'Tour Guide' that gave details of all the places we tend to were thanks to visiting with their websites, contact details and gap hours as well as a map of the tour. It had vouchers for every place just in case we tend to visited once more when the tour and conjointly enclosed an inventory of alternative suggested restaurants.

The first stop on our tour was a standard hot dog from "George's Hot Dogs". Chicago is renown for its hot dogs but not the 'traditional' hot dogs that you think of when you think of America. There is no catsup to be seen on this dog. After hearing regarding however George and his family moved to America from Balkan country, we heard how his little hot dog restaurant became something of an institution in the area. So here we tend to were educated within the ways that of the Chicago Hot Dog. A hot dog roll, a sausage, yellow mustard, green relish, spicy peppers, sliced tomato, a pickle spear, and celery salt. My word, it had been delicious and zilch in need of a full-size portion - no samples here. This hot dog won the award for "Chicago's best hotdog in 2008". I'm undecided United Nations agency has won since then - these dogs square measure undoubtedly the best!

When we had all finished, we tend to create our high the road to following location known as "Hot Chocolate" created and pass by Mindy sculpturer, a pastry chef with over 20 years experience. The website states: "The urban caf? is a wedding of latest food and desserts impressed by seasonal and native ingredients." Mindy has won numerous awards together with 2 consecutive years of the outing Chicago's Eat Out Awards for 'Best Pastry Chef'. This lady knows what she is doing...

We were served chilly, creamy milk with a homespun candy. It was thus delectable, I finished mine a bit too quickly. Others within the teams struggled language it had been a bit too wealthy or sweet. I hadn't noticed... We found out that you could buy packets of the mix and the first 2 ingredients to add to the chocolate powder were cream and full cream milk - gulp. My waistline is not going to be happy... but it was so worth it!

When we're done gratification in our chocolate drink and hearing regarding all the decadent things one will gnaw at this edifice, we tend to head a touch more up the road to "Goddess & Grocer", a gourmet deli and catering business that has catered for the likes of the Rolling Stones and Madonna.
Walking in, my eyes twinkled at the range of tasty treats obtainable and once their websites states, "ready-made salads, a fresh salad bar, sliced deli meats and cheeses, artisanal cheeses, rotisserie chicken and a variety of groceries together with camp-made chocolates, cookies, and desserts, pasta, and sauces, mustards, dressings and condiments, crackers, snack items, wine, and beer", they aren't kidding. This is NOT the place to return to once you are hungry!!! (or maybe it is!)

Here we tend to were treated to a sample portion of the cooked vegetable dish with goats cheese that was terribly tasty. The vegetables were soft-bo utterly (slightly soft while not being mushy) and therefore the goat's cheese provided a salty topping that complemented the dish fantastically. After wanting (and drooling) at the opposite things on supply, we headed back outside.

With ever-filling tummies, we then headed over to Piece, a pizzeria, and brewery. In a secluded a part of the rather giant ethereal edifice, we tend to were fed a slice of the dish and a little glass of brew. Could this get any better?

The piece opened in July 2001 when changing a roofing company garage into a pizza shop with a skylit ceiling and a sunken lounge. The atmosphere is chatty, laid back and friendly. Beer and pizza will do that to you. The brewer, eating apple monger, has won twenty-one major awards since 2002 thus if you are doing stop by, check that you sample a number of their beers.
A few nights per week, they provide singing and by the appearance of a number of the photographs on their web site, it is an evening filled with fun and laughter.

Heading back outside again, we now explore the surrounding neighborhood and our guide tells us all sorts of interesting facts about the buildings, the people, the parks and the history.
It's a superb day and that we fancy each the sunshine and funky shade. Before long, we arrive at "Sultan's Market". This Middle Eastern food edifice was opened twelve years gone by could Ramli. She grew up in Jordan and did not visit an edifice herself till she was eighteen yrs recent. When she opened 'Sultan's Market', she had successful from the terribly begin together with her home-made hoummos. She still oversees the preparation of the food and also the register within the edifice.

The food within the buffet bar that we have a tendency to walked past all looked contemporary, tasty and really tempting. The place is spotlessly clean, the atmosphere clearly jap with mosaic lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Walking past a powerful range of trays of pastry, our cluster was all sitting along during a few corner tables and when hearing regarding however the edifice came to be, we have a tendency to were served a tyrannid bread stuffed with a felafel, hoummos and a cucumber dish. I was thus full by this stage, I'm embarrassed to mention, I fished out the hoummos and cucumber dish and took many bits of the pocket bread but I just couldn't manage any more.
We area unit simply round the corner from our final stop and with serious footsteps and bulging tummies, we arrive in front of iCream, an ice cream cafe. What an unusual place. This is how it works...

You walk in and decide... Hmm, I really feel like peanut butter and mango sorbet ice cream. You walk up to the counter and order it and that they create it - easy! Yes, they need instrumentality that's capable of constructing your favorite flavors on the spot. With their rapid-freezing N machines (which seem like one thing from outer space) they're capable of manufacturing your spread and mango ice during a matter of seconds. Nothing here is pre-prepared.

So we indulge in a small tub of ice cream (far TOO small really!) and think back over the last 3 hours.
What a wonderful time we've had. We've seen and learned regarding the neighborhood (a very little totally different from downtown Chicago that was nice), we've walked about 1.5 miles which I claimed as my exercise of the day and tasted not one however half dozen totally different foods, all which came with a little bit of history. It felt we have a tendency to were very experiencing the town and seeing 'behind the scenes' rather than simply being a traveler.

I adored the manner the food tour was run. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and made the 3 hours simply fly by. Do try their tours if you are in the Chicago area.
